A recipe from the old man.........
I picked the last of my raspberries on Monday. The black bugs had taken over the fruit. I could pull off one and the black bug was at the bottom of the berry eating away. I also had the green inch worms along with the mosquitoes. I forced picked under great scrutiny about two cups of berries and then I quit. I will pick no more. We have enough for five pies in the freezer right now.
I watched a PBS garden show last year which isn't on this year. Shawn was the host and he had a younger chef guy on the show to share old time recipes. I tried it out with my two cups of berries just to see if it would work.
The recipe actually came from the maid of the chef's Southern plantation Grandma. You smash together one cup of sugar with one cup of raspberries with a spoon. It seemed too simple, but it did work and it is good. You refrigerate it of course and it keeps for a week or so as a sauce or better yet as a jam for your toast in the morning.
I used too large of jar for mine. I had two cups of berries and it filled this jar half full. We tried it on our toast the next morning and it is great. There is a little bit of watery sweet juice with it but that goes into the toast with out making it seem soggy. It is a very fresh taste for an in season berry. We don't have vanilla ice cream right now but I know it would be great on it.
Summer colds are in our household and I hate them. I don't need a sore throat in the summer. I don't know where we picked them up but I hope they don't last longer than the two days that we have had them so far. I at first thought it was reacting to work in the old dusty garage down on the farm, but this is a cold just like the one described on the news last night.

Wednsday's sharing..........
Some people wanted me to call this a viburnum bush and other evidence makes me think it is a form of a hydrangea. Either way it is putting out very red berries this year. I don't really remember it doing that before or I would have photographed it. Our rains must have made it produce all the fruit.
I would think the birds will like these but I haven't seen any on the bush as of yet. I will keep watching through the summer and maybe it will feed the cardinals and bluejays.
This is the first bloom of this variety of Asiatic Lily. It reminds me of the old fashion coloring of a tiger lily but it is not the shape. I have a large group of these that I need to get staked as they are all laying down on the ground.
Another new purchase from Walmart. I have a wheel barrow that my dad made in which he filled with petunias every year. I found it in the outer shed and brought it home. I don't think I have the time or money to fill it with these even though I did look for some good bargains. It's a big wheel barrow and it would have taken a lot of money for a lot of plants to fill it. I will find a planter to put these in for the rest of the season. They need a little feeding and some soil in which to spread their roots.
Thanks for stopping by...............working outside today so we will start early before it gets to be too hot.

Tuesday's tidbit.......
My hollyhocks are wimpy this year. It just has not been a normal summer with lots of extreme cold or heat and lots of rain and then no rain. They seem a little timid.
My neighbor has marigolds blooming this year and I stole a snap. I didn't buy any this year to put out so I will hope to do so next year.
Thanks for stopping by.......

Monday's contributions...............
This is a pale orange day lily that looks dusty compared to the other one that I have posted before. They are two different varieties. I bought some from an arboretum that were called unknowns, so they were cheap but a surprise when they first bloomed.
The soybeans are now growing so you can see the rows of plants. The are going north and south in the foreground. The bean field in the background was planted three weeks earlier and you can see the size difference in the two fields. No corn fields to photograph this year in this area. The plants have been sprayed to kill out the offensive plants and that is what you see in the yellow plants in the foreground, dying plants.
Two very small plants that I planted too close together are starting to bloom. I have only four plants this year and really am not pushing for a bumper crop. We will enjoy fresh tomatoes when they are ripe and will not can or freeze any this year. We have the heat and the humidity now to bring on the tomatoes.
We froze another large batch of red raspberries on Sunday. I had picked them on Saturday and will probably go out today to pick more. We spread them out on cookie trays to freeze as was suggested by the Minnesota folk. I think that should work well in packing them up today and they won't be so mushy. No pie until it cools off as the oven will heat up the house.
I did take my final truck load of ladders and tall things away from the garage in Osceola. I will not be taking the truck down to that house ever again. I will just need to go to the house and mow the grass once a week until the final deal is done.

First bloom to last bloom.......
This is the very first of the cluster of red day lily plants to bloom. I have a lot of buds posed ready to open as the season is now here.
When I was out to take a photo of the bright red day lily, I glanced over and saw this old fashion rose was putting out one very last bloom. It actually had stopped blooming a month ago, so this is a late bloomer for sure.
Thanks for stopping by..........I am too busy to tell you what I am doing, maybe later. Some of the projects are coming to an end and others are just beginning. Have a great Saturday.
