"Carnation, Lily, Lily"

This is a famous painting by John Singer Sargent. It is called "Carnation, Lily, Lily." I thought of it when I wrote my yesterday's title. It is a great painting of two girls in the garden lighting their Japanese lanterns. Sargent was a famous artist, who painted portraits for a living, but really preferred to paint anything but portraits.

We have a famous painting of his here in our Des Moines Art Center of two children. They are rich kids and really don't want to have their picture painted. It is said that after he had finished the painting that the kids threw the stuff that was in the painting out of the window. The little girl in the picture died a few years back and told about the experience. The artist also wrote about the two children and he was not amused by their antic that they pulled throughout the entire days of doing the painting.
The painting is very large so the children are almost life size. His ability to describe visually realistic items in an impressionistic way is fascinating.

I love the first picture, it's so sweet. The second one he really captured their feelings in the painting. You can especially see it after reading the story. Thanks for an interesting post!
